| Name: | Grue Some. Just Some. |
|---|
Some is loosely based on the concept of the Grues from the video game Zork, the video game that brings you the line "It is dark. You may be eaten by a grue."
My name is Some.
My name is Some.
Eyes |
Black, and too large for his face. Each is nearly the size of his palm. Customarily hidden behind large, nearly opaque black shades. (Fg. 1) |
Hair |
Black, with green and purple streaks, thanks to an incident in his transformation to human by a god besotted with the Green Goblin. |
Skin |
Very pale, and photosensitive to an extreme. |
Unusual Features |
Some is naturally a Grue, turned human to a certain extent by the Greek god Hermes. He retains most of his pun-based Grue powers, which in his case, boil down to He can always be something, somewhere, sometimes useful. Circumstances have limited that, and he can no longer shapeshift at all. He appears human except for his eyes, his small sharp teeth (no fangs), and his fingers, which are slender and long, with an extra joint. |
Teleportation |
Some can move himself, his clothing, and up to approximately 5 tons easily. Beyond that, and his control of the teleport slips, possibly landing him and his cargo in the wrong place and missing parts, and exhausting him past a point of tolerance. He can't teleport into solid objects, but he does not have to have seen his destination first. He does have to see his present surroundings, and so can be trapped by being blinded or by bright lights if he is an unfamiliar area. |
Photosensitivity |
Some's race, the Grue, live in perfect darkness, and are highly allergic to light. As a demihuman, Some is a bit more tolerant, but bright lights, particularly neon or sunlight, or any sudden burst of light, can be painful or damaging. His shades, a gift from a friend, are designed to adjust automatically to provide him all possible protection, but if he loses them, he's vulnerable to blinding. Fortunately, his eyes are the least human part of him, and the optic nerves will heal themselves in one to two weeks, depending on the degree of damage. His skin is also sensitive, and he compulsively wears sunblock and concealing clothing. Without it, he'll sunburn in starlight, and normal room-level light will leave deep burns and sores. The flip side to his photosentivity is his near-perfect night-vision. He requires no light to see, picking up on heat cues and other forms of radiation. Acute hearing and a marked sensitivity to vibration and air currents are also present, along with a keen, predatory sense of smell. |
Grue |
The Grue (Fg. 2) are a race of subterranean man-eaters, who live in the City. Their culture is only slightly behind that of the humans in whichever world they occupy, as they tend to borrow technology from the world above. They rely on geothermal steam for energy, as electricity tends to cause light anytime there's an accident, and the light from an arcing spark can kill a Grue. Their diets are extremely specialized. The only food they can take nourishment from is human flesh, though they can eat other types of meat and some plants with no harm. The meat must be either live or well-cooked. Dead, raw meat is toxic. In part because of this and because of the blandness of such a limited diet, ornate cooking is an art form dear to the species. Some has a degree in culinary arts, and his skills are not limited to his own dietary needs. Grues use a pun-based magic, mostly relating to the individual's name. Some, whose full name is Grue Some, has the powers he has, and as such belongs to a caste of other Somes, all of whom were chosen because of their eagerness to please and a nearly pathological need to be useful. Somes are the tools of Grue society, a massive force able to teleport and defend. A Some who is not useful would have his name revoked, which is effectively a death sentence, as it removes his magic. Physically, they're very inhuman. Four legs and four arms, each ending in a six-fingered, polyjointed claw, and a short, vestigial tail. They resemble some horrific cross between a centaur and a spider, and are covered in short black hair. Grues also have five genders; Male, Female, Nale, Fenale, and Poppet. In his natural form, Some was a poppet, though as a human, he's physically male. Along with this, they have a five-stranded DNA signature. They also do not sleep. Instead, they enter periods of conscious dreaming and physical rest. Sedatives paralyze, instead of sedating, though true exhaustion, from something such as an overdone teleport, can bring unconsciousness. Some finds this very unnerving. Terrifying, even. As a counterbalance to their extreme sensitivity to light, Grues have a certain amount of control over light-producing things such as lightbulbs and, occasionally, powerlines. They can put out the lights of a reasonably large space. The more space and/or the less familiar the Grue is with the space, the more energy expended. The life-span of a Grue is seventeen to twenty years. Some is ten. They have no soul, in some senses of the word. This renders him not psychically blind, but psychically unintelligible. A probe will find a random cacophony of words, which may or may not give a hint as to what Some is actually thinking, depending on the strength of the psychic. A strong enough probe will incapacitate him with an aphasic trance in which he babbles strings of nonsense words. |
Mental state. |
Some has been through several periods of fasting, in order to better fit in with the human-majority community he lives in. These are detrimental to his sanity, usually leading to a psychotic break when he's alone with a human. He's uncomfortable, stuck between being a Grue and a human. While structurally, his body is human, it's cellularly Grue and his metabolism requires that he eat approximately twice his weight in human flesh a day. He currently has a stable, relatively-unobjectionable food source, and so does not have to hunt. That, in turn, leaves him restless. He needs to be useful, particularly when in emotional distress, and so can leave himself open to making very bad choices about who he helps. Under most circumstances, anyone who specifically asks him for help will recieve it, and he's loath to betray someone he's agreed to help. He's also very afraid of ice, being eaten, or being abandoned. |
Physical |
As a human, Some is not particularly strong. He's very fast, and agile, able to twist slightly more than a human should, but not dramatically so. Most of his strength is in his long, polyjointed hands. When he hunts, his favorite technique is throttling his victim into unconsciousness, using either his hands or a wire garrot. His human form is skinny, apparently a young man about nineteen or twenty. With sharp, pointed features and his eyes hidden behind the shades, he looks surprisingly like the sort of poser-Goth you find in Hot Topic. Black clothes, long sleeves, high collars, fingerless gloves and stripped socks. It took him a while to adjust to the idea of clothing, as Grues don't wear anything beyond the occassional ornamental scarf, but his sensitive skin requires it. He has a few notable scars. A small line of stylized stitches on his throat, a long line across his forehead that dips into his right eyebrow, and ring-shaped scars around the bases of three of the fingers on his right hand. |
